Cold, blustery, the fifth of March, 1928 and in his office, Bishop Samuel Stritch sign a document that was to affect the lives of countless peoples for years to come...

Carved out of farm land and cow pasture, lying on the fringe of the far North End, this Community of people began to work and pray together. Under the guiding hand of Rev. Francis A. Slattery, they held card parties, bazaars, and other money raising events; trying to amass enough money to begin construction of a Church Building.

With the Depression, came years of hard work, much prayer and hope that God would come to the aid of His people. Amid the turmoil of those years, Father Michael McFadden was appointed as Pastor. He established the St. Vincent de Paul Society to aid the poor and destitute and spurred the various societies to sponsor feather parties as a means of procuring revenue.

As the country began to emerge from the Great Depression, Father Stephen Jazwiecki was selected to guide the Parish.

For the next 25 years Father's influence was felt through the Community. Under his guiding hand the green of grass replaced the gray of stone. The Novena to the Sorrowful Mother was established...the burden of debt was removed...the practice of saying the Rosary by the Laity every day was begun...a new school was constructed...the convent was enlarged and renovated...the sanctuary of the church was relocated and the church modeled to permit a larger seating capacity.

The untimely death of Father Jazwiecki in the Fall of 1962 left a void that was soon filled by Father Sylvester Schmelzer, a kindly Shepherd to his flock.

Father began immediately to enlist the enthusiasm and dedication of the Parishioners to plan for a new rectory and Church. Father established the Legion of Mary and the Credit Union and enlarged upon the practice of the daily Rosary to have it said before every Mass every day. With completion of the new Rectory in 1965, plans went full speed ahead to build a new Church of modern design. Tithing was stressed as a means of paying for the construction and on May 21, 1969, the sacrifices of many people were realized as a beautiful Church, condusive to the Liturgical reforms of Vatican II, was dedicated.

Father Robert Reinhart was appointed administrator to succeed Father Schmelzer in 1972. Shortly after, Father was officially appointed Pastor and began a work of Parish involvement in the Community life. Under his leadership, more aspects of the Liturgical reform were implemented; giving this Community a deeper and richer meaning to their Worship.

Father Joseph Jaros took up the reins of leadership in 1976 and began plans to enable the Parish to celebrate their 50th Anniversary as a Parish and Community of worshipping people.

In 1985, we welcomed Father Thomas Extejt to the Parish as Pastor. He helped strengthen the bond between the Parish and its members. In 1992, he helped guide the process of a merger between the Parish schools of St. Michael and St. Vincent de Paul into St. Elizabeth Seton School.

In 1996, Fr. Thomas Gorman came to lead our flock. His sense of humor was wonderful and was a fine leader of our Parish.

Fr. Gorman's stay was brief, however. Later that year, a kind, caring Pastor came to St. Vincent de Paul. He was Fr. Gerald Robinson. His gentle hand led us in worship for about nine months. In that time he made many friends in the parish. But, unfortunately, his stay at St. Vincent de Paul was brief as well.

In 1997, we had the honor to have Bishop James Hoffman come to lead us in worship. He wanted to take an active role in the Central Cities Ministries of Toledo, which St. Vincent de Paul is a part of. Since he spent some time at our Parish, he figured we were his best choice. He fit in very well with us and it seemed he never left. He remembered a lot of our parishioners from when he was with us in the 1970's. He then took a role in getting us our current Pastor.

Fr. John Laudick came to us in July of 1998 from Providence Hospital in Sandusky. He has helped the church become a stable community into the 21st Century. He has been active in making sure the church is running well and our parishioners appreciate it. With the many Pastors we have had in the past three years, Fr. Laudick has brought back a sense of stability to our flock at St. Vincent de Paul Church.
