The Rev. Leonard W. Broughan By Alex Nussbaum The Record [Bergen County, NJ] December 27, 1998 The Rev. Leonard W. Broughan, known for his eloquent preaching at the Carmel Retreat House in Mahwah, died on Christmas Eve in Niagara Falls, Canada. He was 69. Reverend Broughan spent a decade until 1994 organizing retreats at the 30-room Mahwah house, which offers visitors instructional programs, time for quiet reflection, and an opportunity to work on personal problems. A priest and teacher for 43 years, he also served as an associate pastor at St. Therese Of Lisieux Church in Cresskill and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Tenafly. His final assignment over the last three years was at Mount Carmel Spiritual Center in Niagara Falls in Ontario. Reverend Broughan was ordained in 1955 by Cardinal John O'Hara of Philadelphia. A strong language major, he taught Latin, French, and German in Catholic high schools in Philadelphia. He also worked part time as a religion professor at Holy Family and Rosemont colleges and LaSalle University. In 1986, he joined the Carmelites, the Roman Catholic order known for its emphasis on preaching, teaching, and missionary work. He is survived by a sister, Margaret. Arrangements are through Barrett Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly. |
