  Rev. James L. Liberty; Preached, Counseled in Norwich Diocese

The Rev. James L. Liberty, a Roman Catholic priest who dedicated much of his career to family counseling and inspirational preaching in the Norwich Diocese, died Tuesday at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich after a brief illness. He was 64.

Born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., he graduated from the Oblate High School Seminary in Bucksport, Maine, completed his theological studies at the Oblate College and Seminary in Natick, Mass., and was ordained in 1957 in Lowell, Mass.

In 1961, Liberty was assigned to Immaculata Retreat House in Willimantic, where he was part of the preaching and counseling team. From 1973 to 1976 he served as director.

Liberty also earned a master's degree in psychology from the University of Connecticut and provided marriage and family counseling in the Department of Catholic Family Services of the Diocese of Norwich. Between 1978 and 1981, Liberty served as a member of the advisory and planning council of the state Department of Mental Retardation for the Tolland region.

Liberty was also a member of the Norwich Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 13 White Cross Council and The Rev. Daniel Mullen Assembly Fourth Degree.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Jeannine Motolo of Syracuse, N.Y.; a niece, Patricia Snyder of Syracuse, N.Y.; and two nephews, Perry and Paul Motolo of Syracuse, N.Y.
