The recent death of a Catholic priest has prompted lawyers to remove him from a civil lawsuit that alleged he abused a girl in the 1960s.

Lawyers representing the plaintiff filed paperwork Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court to formally remove the Rev. Francis McGlynn from the suit filed against him and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in October.

McGlynn, 84, died earlier this month.

The notice of dismissal covered only McGlynn. The diocese remains in the suit.

The 2011 suit was the fourth filed against McGlynn since 2003, according to court records. The other three have been settled.

The plaintiff in this case accused McGlynn of sexually abusing her when she was a student at St. Catherine School in Kansas City between 1963 and 1964.

McGlynn had denied the allegation through his lawyer.

When the lawsuit was filed, the diocese said it received the first reports of sexual misconduct against McGlynn in April 2002. After receiving recommendations from his Independent Review Board, then-Bishop Raymond J. Boland “informed McGlynn that he could no longer present himself as a Roman Catholic priest,” the diocese reported.
