At year’s end, the columnist can think of a few things that need commemoration. For instance, the Hotel indigo on Lindell Boulvard, once was the Bel Aire Hotel, that housed the St. Louis Cardinals Football team. Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill demanded players sleep there the night before a home game to prevent them from philandering at watering holes. When they awoke, many had backaches, including Jim Hart who had to stretch most of the day. Restaurant Depot, where prominent bonifaces buy their seafood and beef and tell customers “fresh catch just brought in” or “the best prime beef from Omaha stockyards.” The lot on the 4300 block of Delmar Blvd., on which once stood the best little whorehouse in our town. The old County Courthouse in Clayton – now County Police HQ – where a neighboring building was the site for the second swearing-in ceremony for County Exec Charlie Dooley. SNAP, which tells us that through the Vatican Info Service on Pontifical Acts, Cardinal Raymond Burke has been upped to a member of the Congregation for Bishops to oversee the selection of new bishops. Hometowner and then- Msgr. Richard Stika reportedly notified Florissant resident Fred Carr, that Archbishop Robert Carlson is writing a letter to send to all the churches, where now-deceased Father John Robert Weiberg was assigned, to be read after the holidays urging victims of abuse to come forward. Father Weiberg worked at parishes in St. Charles County and in several rural parishes in Advance, Charleston and Arcadia, Mo. Carr’s sex accusation as a child was the second against the priest. The Pageant Theater, whose cashier in the 1930s, Saroula Bruigla, was courted by a young Greek and Jefferson Hotel busboy, Spyros Skouras, who was to become a motion picture pioneer and head of 20th Century Fox. Ballpark Village, which would be unfair to re-name the project Ballpark Shtetl, but there’s no denying that the once-grand designs for it received a substantial downsizing in 2010. It has been rescued from those who held out hopes that it would become a landfill. .. Lindell Towers, where Leo “The Lip” Durocher lived in 1933, when he joined the Cardinals “Gas House Gang” and later lived there with his wife and movie siren Loraine Day. And finally, the moribund Busch’s Grove Market, which once was Bush’s Grove, where Gussie Busch held rollicking, al fresco dinner parties concluding with guests tossing food at each other.
