Twice this month, including yesterday, the Bangor Daily News has written stories about Fr. Walter Dayton Salisbury. (See links below) We believe DC's Cardinal Donald Wuerl should aggressively seek out anyone who may have seen, suspected or suffered Salisbury's crimes, so that he might be prosecuted again and so that those suffering in silence might find healing. For decades, Catholic bishops have passively sat back and done nothing, waiting for victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to step forward. Eight years ago, bishops adopted a new policy and pledged to work harder to protect kids and help victims. Wuerl can honor these pledges and use his websites, parish bulletins and pulpit announcements to seek out others who may have information about Salisbury's crimes. Or he can do what he and his colleagues have done for decades and irresponsibly do nothing.
