Accused Predator Priest Now on Youth Agency's Board Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests November 12, 2009 http://www.snapnetwork.org/snap_press_releases/2009_press_releases/111209_accused_predator_priest_now_on_youth_agencys_board.htm An accused predator priest is now on the advisory board of a Long Island-based non-profit that serves children. The website of COPAY, the Community Organization for Parents and Youth, in Great Neck lists Msgr. Brendan P. Riordan as a board member. http://copayinc.com/ExecutiveDirector.php A child sex abuse lawsuit against Riordan was settled out-of-court in 1995. He allegedly molested a boy at a controversial and now-closed church-run treatment center for troubled priests in Massachusetts called the House of Affirmation. "He's not been defrocked, so his bishop lets this credibly accused predator be in this position involving children," said Barbara Dorris of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAPnetwork.org). "This is incredibly callous, reckless and inexcusable. Any honor or post or role that gives an alleged child molester credibility is irresponsible." According to its website, COPAY provides 'sexual abuse groups' for people who were molested as kids. "This is a child molester's dream position," said Fr. Robert Hoatson (862.368.2800) of Road to Recovery, a New Jersey abuse group. "It's the same old pattern – a bishop quietly letting an accused predator priest get closer to kids." "This organization obviously has an inadequate vetting process," said Dick Regan (607.368.0463), an abuse survivor. "Church and agency officials will minimize Riordan's actual contact with kids, but any role for a man like this in an organization that serves youngsters is inappropriate," said David Clohessy of St. Louis. He's SNAP's national director. Riordan was ordained in 1970 as a priest of the Rockville Centre diocese. He is reportedly close to Msgr. Alan Placa, another accused pedophile priest who has been on the payroll of Rudy Giuliani. A photo of Riordan and his work assignments are available at BishopAccountability.org He worked in Great Neck, Farmington, Deer Park, Seaford, and Uniondale. COPAY's director is [name and phone number redacted]. |
