	Vatican Accepts Sanctions against Ex-Priest MPBN May 7, 2009 http://www.mpbn.net/News/MaineHeadlineNews/tabid/968/ctl/ViewItem/mid/2905/ItemId/10451/Default.aspx The Vatican has accepted the decision of a tribunal, which found former priest Frederick Carrigan guilty of abusing a minor. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Maine says Carrigan was removed from regular ministry in 1989 for "inappropriate behavior with an adult." In 1991, he was acused of abusing a minor, dating back to 1972. The Diocese says Carrigan's "limited ministry ended completely in 1972 and he now lives out of state. Carrigan has been assigned to a life of prayer and penance, which the Diocese says means he can't minister, present himself as a priest or wear clerical clothes. He servied in parishes in Bath, Gardiner, Bangor, Dover-Foxcroft, East Millinocket and Hampden, according to the Diocese. In a separate case, the Diocese also announced that a church volunteer in Augusta has been permanently removed from his position because of a previous conviction of sexual abuse of a minor. Paul Douin, 69, was most recently a volunteer at St. Augustine's Church. Diocese officials say he was sentenced in 1977 to four years in prison for the offenses, but avoided a background check because he was never officially assigned to his position as a "sacristan," which is a person who prepares the altar for liturgical ceremonies.
