Man Who Spurred Abuse Lawsuit Dies Telegraph Herald October 31, 2007 http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=178615 The man whose lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Dubuque spurred a $5 million settlement with victims of clergy sexual abuse has died. Jim Cummins, 62, died on Friday, Oct. 26, at his Texas home surrounded by his family. A veteran newsman with NBC News, Cummins retired earlier this year and soon thereafter was diagnosed with cancer. Cummins' case, claiming that he was molested by Monsignor William Roach in a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, parish in 1962, was headed to a jury trial early last year. But before it opened the archdiocese agreed to settle with 20 people who claimed abuse at the hands of archdiocesan clergy. |
