Rev. Underwood's Molestation Case Moved to November By Stephanie Innes Arizona Daily Star October 8, 2007 http://regulus2.azstarnet.com/blogs/desertbeliefs/6061/ The Rev. Gary Underwood, a Catholic priest accused of molesting three boys at a Northwest Side church during the mid-80s, will not have another court date until November. Underwood, who is in his 50s, was supposed to appear for a pre-trial hearing this month, but prosecutor Kathleen Mayer asked for a delay while she works on another case. Underwood is the first Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson priest to be accused of sexual molestation since the diocese emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005. He's accused of abusing three boys — all under the age of 15 — while he was a priest at St. Odilia's Catholic Church. To date, no civil actions have been filed in conjunction with the case. The diocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004 in the face of potentially expensive lawsuits alleging sexual abuse of children by several priests that had served in the local diocese since the 1950s. The diocese created a settlement pool of $22 million to pay victims. |
