Boston— A former member of a Roman Catholic religious order has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to raping and assaulting two young boys he counseled at a youth services center.

Edward Anthony Holmes, 65, exploited the two boys while he was a counselor at the Nazareth Child Care Center in the city's Jamaica Plain neighborhood between 1976 and 1983, according to Suffolk County District Attorney's office spokesman Jake Wark.

Holmes, a former brother with the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, pleaded guilty to six counts of child rape, 10 counts of assault and battery and one count of posing for nude photographs.

Known as "Brother Tony" when he worked at the center, Holmes victimized the boys after the Department of Social Services removed them from their own homes because of unhealthy or abusive conditions there.

Holmes was indicted on the sexual assault charges in September 2005. He was arrested as a fugitive from justice a month later in Washington, D.C.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Carol Ball stayed the sentence until Jan. 8. If Holmes does not voluntarily report on that date, she said she will impose a harsher sentence.
