The St. Louis Archdiocese has issued a statement regarding the petition by Gary Wolken, a former priest of the archdiocese, for early parole from a 15-year sentence imposed in 2003 for child sexual abuse.

Wolken pleaded guilty to two counts of sodomy and six counts of child molestation. The archdiocese's statement reads in part:

"The archdiocese has heretofore been unaware of any intention on the part of Gary Wolken to petition for parole. ... Archbishop Raymond L. Burke has already initiated the process of permanently removing Gary Wolken from the clerical state (laicization). Pending the decision of the Vatican, Gary Wolken is forbidden to function or represent himself in any way as a priest."
