A Clark County man faces several criminal charges accusing him of sexually abusing an underage boy.

Mark Alan Myers, 44, of 1120 Old Ruckerville Road was charged on Wednesday with third-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, promoting a sexual performance by a minor and use of a minor in a sexual performance.

All the charges filed so far against Myers involve one alleged victim, who was 14 years old when the abuse allegedly began in 1998, according to Capt. Arlen Horton of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Horton said he expects to charge Myers with at least 25 additional felony counts involving approximately 10 juveniles between the ages of 12 and 17.

According to Horton, Myers befriended most of the boys through his work at a church, which Horton declined to name.

"He went on group outings like camping trips with the church," Horton explained.

Myers is not the same as Mark Myers of Mount Sterling, who is the minister at Bethlehem Christian Church on Schollsville Road.

Once Myers gained the trust of the juveniles, Horton alleged, he lured them into his home, where he would watch pornographic movies with them and encourage them to engage in sexual activities.

The alleged victim in the current charges filed against Myers is the only person so far who is alleging that Myers actually had physical sexual contact with him.

Horton said that for two and half to three years, Myers engaged in sexual relations with a boy beginning when his alleged victim was 14 years old.

He said reports of the alleged sexual activities with the victims surfaced when one of the boys experienced a religious conversion recently and confessed what he had done with Myers.

Horton said authorities executed a search warrant on Myers' home on Tuesday, but failed to turn up any evidence related to the alleged criminal activities.

Myers was arraigned in Clark District Court this morning. He is being held in the county detention center in lieu of a $300,000 cash bond.

Horton is asking anyone who knows of any cases of illegal sexual activity involving Myers to contact the sheriff's office at 744-4390.
