ELKHORN - Illinois Priest Donald McGuire was sentenced Tuesday for sexually assaulting two teenagers in Wisconsin back in the 1960s.

Part of the sentence is being stayed as Father McGuire prepares his appeal.

But if his appeal fails, McGuire will face seven years in prison.

Father McGuire is 76 years old. His age and very poor health played a role in the decision to hold off on prison time.

But the judge says the acts he is accused of deserve serious punishment because of the long term effects his victims describe.

One of the two victims said, "I feel he does not have remorse and is still a vile danger to society and should be imprisoned."

But McGuire told the judge in Walworth County court that he is innocent. "You can very well think I'm guilty because I chose to say nothing in my defense. But your honor, you are looking at an innocent man."

The assaults happened in the 1960s. The victims say McGuire assaulted them at a Wisconsin retreat when they were 14-years-old.

The victims were students at Loyola Academy, the Catholic high school where McGuire taught.

McGuire has also been sentenced to 20 years probation. He'll be confined to a nursing home and have to register as a sex offender.
