  Diocese's Priests Get Assignments

The Express-Times [Allentown PA]
June 8, 2004

Priests from the Diocese of Allentown received new assignments Monday.

The assignments become effective Tuesday.

"Every year at this time, after new priest ordainments, the diocese has to assign the new priests," diocese spokesman Matt Kerr said. "(New assignments) serve as a way to expose priests to different parts of the diocese."

The Rev. Edward J. Essig will continue to serve as parochial vicar, but will be moved from the Church of Notre Dame in Bethlehem to St. Ambrose Church in Schuylkill Haven.

Essig will be filling a vacancy previously occupied by the Rev. Ronald Yarrosh. Yarrosh faces more than 100 charges of sexual abuse of children after police found hundreds of child pornography images at the church rectory and his home.

Kerr said Yarrosh is no longer part of the diocese.

The newly ordained Rev. Joel E. Kiefer will fill Essig's role of parochial vicar at the Church of Notre Dame in Bethlehem.

Also newly ordained, the Rev. Quyet A. Pham will be assigned to Saints Simon and Jude Church in Bethlehem as a parochial vicar.

Pham will replace the Rev. James L. Maranki, who was reassigned as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Church in Bath.

Maranki will replace the Rev. Dominic Thao Pham, who was reassigned to parochial vicar at St. Theresa Church in Hellertown.

The Rev. Deogratias Rwegasira will move from parochial vicar at St. George, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Stephen churches to parochial vicar at St. Bernard and St. Michael churches in Easton.

The Rev. Raymond P. Slezak will be reassigned as pastor from St. Joseph Church in Sheppton, Schuylkill County, to St. Joseph and St. Stanislaus churches in Bethlehem.
