  McCormack to Be Questioned Again
Bishop Asked Why Priest Was Reassigned

January 24, 2003

BOSTON -- New Hampshire Bishop John B. McCormack will be in Boston Friday for a second day of questioning by lawyers for men who say they were molested by a Massachusetts priest.

McCormack's deposition in the case of the Rev. Joseph Birmingham began Wednesday. He was questioned for about five hours.

Birmingham's alleged victims said he abused them when he served in four Massachusetts parishes from the 1960s to the 1980s. They also said McCormack knew about the abuse, but failed to stop it.

Four men who sat in on McCormack's deposition Wednesday said that when he was questioned about why Birmingham was allowed to continue in parish work, McCormack repeatedly said other church supervisors were responsible for making those decisions.
