Father James A. Jackson, M.M.,

a missioner to Hawaii for 45 years, died on March 16 at St. Teresa's Residence in Ossining. He was 86. Ordained to the priesthood for the Maryknoll Fathers on June 12, 1948, he was immediately assigned to Hawaii where he spent his entire mission career. He first did pastoral work at a parish on Oahu, concentrating on evangelizing new converts. After three years, he traveled to Tokyo to study the Japanese culture and language to better serve Japanese nationals living in Hawaii. Returning to Hawaii, he once again took up parish work. He also served as representative of Maryknoll's Hawaii Region on the Asian-Pacific Peace and Justice Committee and in 1989 was appointed to a three-year term as assistant to Maryknoll's Hawaii regional superior. At age 75, he moved to the Maryknoll Residence in Los Altos, Calif., where he did pastoral work with senior citizens before moving to St. Teresa's in 1997. Born in Minneapolis, he attended Maryknoll College in Clarks Summit, Pa., and Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining. He earned a bachelor's degree in liberal studies at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. A Funeral Mass was offered March 22 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Cemetery.
