	Chase Has Fatal End; Brockton Man Held Boston Globe March 27, 1994 A Brockton man has been charged with manslaughter involving an automobile after a bizarre chain of events led to the death of another man. Authorities allege that Jason Paltry, 21, killed 47-year-old Paul Hightower of Brockton with a car Friday night - even though Paltry's vehicle never struck the older man. Paltry allegedly attempted to run down three young pedestrians with his car on Pine Avenue at about 9 p.m. and made two attempts to run down Hightower before he was pulled over by police, Brockton Police Lt. Robert Morrill said. Morrill said Hightower collapsed and died in front of police officers after telling them that Paltry had used a car to chase him into woods on North Layden Street. Police believe Hightower happened by in a van as Paltry made repeated passes to strike the pedestrians and gave chase. Hightower followed Paltry into a dead-end road near North Layden Street and left his van in an apparent attempt to talk to Paltry, Morrill said. Paltry responded by trying to run him over, Morrill added. Hightower ran on foot into woods nearby, Morrill said. When police arrived and arrested Paltry a short time later on North Layden Street, Hightower drove up to the officers and apparently identified Paltry, but collapsed in front of the officers as he was telling his story, Morrill said. Police said the case is under investigation and did not release a motive for Paltry's alleged actions. Paltry is being held on charges of manslaughter, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, driving under the influence, and driving to endanger, authorities said. He will be arraigned at Brockton District Court tomorrow, Morrill said.
