  Rev. Charles Loeffler Retired Missionary and Priest

Rev. Charles M. Loeffler, a retired missionary and parish priest, died Wednesday at the Campion Center in Weston, where he had lived for the past year. He was 80.

Born in Mattapan, Father Loeffler graduated from Boston College High School in 1929 and began his training for the priesthood at the Society of Jesus in Lenox. He completed his training at Weston College, where he was ordained in 1941.

For 26 years, Father Loeffler worked as a missionary in Iraq, teaching theology, English and mathematics at Baghdad College until 1969, when the Jesuit missionaries were expelled from that country.

After returning to the United States, he served as pastoral minister at Immaculate Conception Church in the South End and was a chaplain at Boston City Hospital from 1975 to 1983.

Father Loeffler leaves four sisters, Grace Jason of Weymouth, Ruth Schill of Toms River, N.J., Sister Mary Teresa of New York City, and Rita Healy of Cambridge; and a brother, Rev. Richard A. Loeffler of Greensboro, N.C.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at the Campion Center. Burial will be in Campion Center Cemetery.
